| Pompeii was once a wealthy Roman town of 20,000. In 79 A.D. it was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted and dumped 30 feet of hot mud and ash on the city. Most of the city has now been excavated and visitors are free to wander around the ruins. Most of the artwork has been moved the the Archaeological Museum in Naples. | |||||||
