Description : On Friday, October 24 there was a strike. The Metro and several museums were closed, including the forum. This is the strikers preparing to march. This is in Piazza Repubblica, which was a block from my hotel. The closed sign was taken from the entrance to the Forum.

Description : Details of the Arch of Constantine. The roundels are actually from an older Hadrianic monument. It was changed to depict Constantine instead of Hadrian. This is a scene from a lion hunt. The lion was not part of the original carving; it was added later.

Trajan's Column  Sm    Med  
Description : Trajan's Column. It was built between AD 107 and 113. This was a part of Trajan's Forum. It was built to celebrate his victory in the Dacian wars, fought against the Germanic Dacians in modern day Romania. The column is 100 feet tall and includes carvings of over 2,000 figures.

Description : Inside the Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri (Church of St. Mary of the Angels and Martyrs). This church was designed by Michelangelo, and is located in what was once the central hall of the Baths of Diocletian. From the outside, this church doesn't look like much but the inside is very impressive.

Description : Chiesa del Gesu. This is the outside of the Gesu Church, the headquarters of the Jesuits. Ignatius repeatedly tried to have this church built, but was never successful. It wasn't until 1568, 12 years after his death, that work was finally begun. The church was finally consecrated in 1584.

Description : The Pantheon. Built in A.D. 117 - 125 by the Emperor Hadrian to replace a temple that was built in 27 B.C. Originally, the Pantheon was a temple to all of the gods. It later was used as a church. The original one-piece granite columns of the earlier temple were reused on the portico. This is the best preserved ancient building in Rome.

Description : Ostia Antica. 2,000 years ago Ostia Antica was a thriving Roman port town. Most of this town has been excavated and open for exploration. At its height, this town had 60,000 people, so the site is huge. My feet gave out before I could see the entire thing.
